You can easily get cash back on your groceries by paying with a gift card, let me show you how.
Gift card guideCashback rates go up and down so it depends on which retailer you’re spending with. But typically, on groceries you’d get between 3&5%
Which means if a family was spending £150 a week on groceries and they got 5% cashback for 12 months they could get £390 a year in cashback.
It honestly depends what you’re looking for as the gift card instant cashback feels like you’re getting more of a discount, whereas the ones with longer cashout times are the ones that feel like long-term savers for Christmas that build up over time.
If I had to choose two it would be TopCashback for online spending and EverUp for instant cashback for everyday spending.
TopCashback and Quidco: I think it’s more user friendly but it’s worth having both to compare rates.
For me if you’re going to spend the money anyway, you may as well get cashback on it. It’s about being strategic with it- if you know you’re going to spend £500 a month in Asda it will take less than 2 minutes to load that money onto a gift card on EverUp and start earning cashback.
The only time I’d say to watch out is if you’re potentially going to want to return a product (particularly if it’s a higher ticket item) as the money would then go back onto a gift card (so if you’re thinking along this line TopCashback and Quidco may be a better bet as it goes back onto your card). But for things like groceries it’s perfect.
They all offer free memberships. Some like TopCashback offer a pro membership but these aren’t necessary.
In most normal situations no. Cashback is usually treated as a discount, not income- so for normal personal use you don’t pay tax on it. If you’re using cashback through a business, speak to your accountant.
This depends on what app you’re using. Some apps like TopCashback and Quidco can take up to 6 months to clear- this could be great if you want to build savings over time and don’t want to dip into it as it’s such low effort or if you want a refund as you can still pay with your card. Others are instant like EverUp, JamDoughnut and Cheddar.
They are affiliate platforms where brands pay cashback sites commission for sending customers. The cashback site keeps some of the commission and passes some back to you as cashback.
Some of the catches I’d say is tracking isn’t always perfect as some rely on tracking cookies which can be frustrating if you’re expecting your cashback to track and it doesn’t. It can also sometimes be quite a lengthy process depending on which app you’re using which can be frustrating. Also Cashback can be declined so it’s definitely important to read the small print as some items may not be eligible or you may have to reach a certain amount.
So I would recommend having an account with all of them so you can compare the rates but be very careful thinking you can use two at the same time because you can’t always go through TopCashback and pay with a gift card from EverUp for example as it may mean you end up with no cashback from either.
Don’t spend any money until you’ve done a cashback check because you’ll be surprised at how many retailers offer it.
