Cashback app comparisons

It honestly depends what you're looking for as the gift card instant cashback feels like you're getting more of a discount, whereas the ones with longer cashout times are the ones that feel like long-term savers for Christmas that build up over time.

If I had to choose two it would be TopCashback for online spending and EverUp for instant cashback for everyday spending.

Which cashback apps pay the most?

Cashback rates go up and down so it depends on which retailer you’re spending with. But typically, on groceries you’d get between 3&5%

Which means if a family was spending £150 a week on groceries and they got 5% cashback for 12 months they could get £390 a year in cashback.

Are cashback apps worth it?

For me if you’re going to spend the money anyway, you may as well get cashback on it. It’s about being strategic with it- if you know you're going to spend £500 a month in Asda it will take less than 2 minutes to load that money onto a gift card on EverUp and start earning cashback.

The only time I’d say to watch out is if you’re potentially going to want to return a product (particularly if it’s a higher ticket item) as the money would then go back onto a gift card (so if you're thinking along this line TopCashback and Quidco may be a better bet as it goes back onto your card). But for things like groceries it’s perfect.

How long does cashback take to pay out?

This depends on what app you’re using. Some apps like TopCashback and Quidco can take up to 6 months to clear- this could be great if you want to build savings over time and don’t want to dip into it as it's such low effort or if you want a refund as you can still pay with your card. Others are instant like EverUp, JamDoughnut and Cheddar.

How do cashback apps actually make money?

They are affiliate platforms where brands pay cashback sites commission for sending customers. The cashback site keeps some of the commission and passes some back to you as cashback.

For example:

  1. You buy something for £100.
  2. The retailer pays TopCashback 10% (£10).
  3. TopCashback gives you £7.
  4. They keep £3.

What's the catch with cashback apps?

Some of the catches I’d say is tracking isn’t always perfect as some rely on tracking cookies which can be frustrating if you're expecting your cashback to track and it doesn’t. It can also sometimes be quite a lengthy process depending on which app you're using which can be frustrating. Also Cashback can be declined so it’s definitely important to read the small print as some items may not be eligible or you may have to reach a certain amount.

How do I personally maximise cashback?

Don’t spend any money until you’ve done a cashback check because you’ll be surprised at how many retailers offer it.

Some I’ve been surprised with are Ikea, B&Q, B&M, the Harvester, Deliveroo, Virgin experience days.
