I've filmed a step-by-step walkthrough showing how I buy and use a cashback gift card for my weekly food shop.
You buy a digital gift card with money you were spending anyway, and get a little back.
Pick a cashback app that offers gift cards for the shops you already use.
Choose your retailer and amount, then buy the digital gift card in the app.
Use the gift card at the till or online. You can usually still use your loyalty card too.
Your cashback appears in the app. Timing and withdrawal options vary by provider.
* Please check that the retailer allows you to use a gift card online before purchasing one. Some supermarkets are in-store only.
Try your normal weekly budget and an example cashback rate.
This is an illustration, not a guaranteed return. Cashback rates and retailer availability change.
Compare apps, sign-up bonuses, payout times and my reviews before you decide where to start.
Compare cashback appsYes, if your chosen supermarket is available in the app. Check the gift card terms before buying, as accepted stores and online use can vary.
Most retailers let you pay the remaining balance with another payment method, but check the retailer’s terms before you reach the till.
Refunds will return to the gift card rather than your bank account so it’s really important to be mindful to use them for things you’d be unlikely to return, unless you’d be happy to have the credit on a gift card. This is just another reason why I think it’s so good to use on your food shopping.
I think if you’re wanting to budget for your food shop, this could be a really useful way to help you avoid overspending while still getting cashback. For example, loading £500 on an Asda gift card at the start of the month, if that’s where you always shop, would mean you can check how much you have left each week.
I load my monthly budget onto a gift card to keep me on track with my budget
