Eurocamp Review: Le Grande Metairie

Welcome back to my Eurocamp review series!

If you’ve read my other Eurocamp blogs, you’ll know that it’s probably our favourite way to holiday! I’ve got a whole host of information on other Eurocamp sites across Southern France and Italy as well as well as my Ultimate Guide to a Eurocamp holiday blog, which has got everything you’ll need to know about booking a Eurocamp holiday.

But for now, here’s my review of Le Grande Metairie, what I would say is a medium-sized site in Northwest France in Brittany near Carnac which is beautiful!

The local beach at Carnac was about 10 minutes away

This site is in a woodland setting and even has its own mini farm so it has a very rural feel to it (a bit like Centre Parcs!) and makes you want to explore! My favourite things about this site were:

  • The pools and the lazy river! We loved bobbing around here during the day and the pools were immaculately clean and had plenty of variety with slides etc. Plus they were heated!

  • The mini farm - the kids absolutely loved saying hello to the animals every morning on our way to get croissants!

  • The grounds were stunning, so much greenery and wildlife. It was so peaceful, I even managed to read a book in my downtime!

To keep costs down we drove to this site. We got the overnight ferry from Portsmouth to St Malo and then drove about two hours from the ferry to the Eurocamp. It was mostly motorways so it was a really easy drive. The overnight ferry was so easy to navigate. We headed to bed shortly after boarding and when we woke in the morning we’d arrived! The return ferry is during the day though so this was a bit of a longer day, but lots to do on the ferry!

The accommodation is nestled amongst the gorgeous grounds

With Eurocamps, you get what you pay for in terms of accommodation and we've stayed in a huge variety from basic to more luxury! Here, we spent £600 for 10 nights and I was pleasantly surprised at how comfy the beds were! We had three bedrooms, a huge double shower and a gated outside deck which was great for the kids to play on.

The original accomodation we were placed in at this site was VERY dated - im talking bright red sofas and overall very disappointing. However, when we spoke to the Eurocamp team they moved us into one of the brand new lodges on site for no extra cost! Really good customer service and the second accommodation was much better!

  • Things we liked -the accommodation wasn’t far from the facilities of the site - we took the kids bikes with us so they could cycle to and from the pool and shops.

  • Things to be aware of - bed linen and towels are not provided as standard. You will need to either pack your own or pay for a linen pack.

There was a gorgeous restaurant on-site here. I had salmon one night which was pricey but well-worth it, it was delicious!

The site shop is well stocked but a little-overpriced although we enjoyed picking up some croissants from there in the morning and passing through the farm to see the animals.

The nearest town is a few miles away so popping to the nearest supermarket wasn't an issue as we had the car.

  • Things we liked - the restaurant here overlooks the pool which is lovely - the food was great and nice to have the option if you don’t want to cook! You can grab a takeaway pizza on site so did this one evening and had a pizza picnic in the forest on one of the many picnic benches.

  • Things to be aware of - We ventured out to the local off site supermarket - Super U -  not the most budget friendly supermarket! But the fresh fish was lovely.

The pool complex wasn't the biggest we’ve experienced at Eurocamp but there was plenty of choice and the grounds were stunning as they were all set within lush greenery and gorgeous flowers. There were two large outdoor pools, an indoor pool, an outdoor pool with a cover on and a lazy river. There was also a splash/paddling area for toddlers and a couple of small outdoor slides. All of the pools were heated so we were never cold.

  • Things we liked - plenty of space to relax and the general areas were well maintained - lots of beautiful flowers all around the pool area and very clean.

  • Things to be aware of - no big water slides for older children.

Entertainment here was very low key - but that didn’t bother us too much - we liked a bit of a slower pace and relaxing.

There was much-less in terms of evening entertainment here but there were plenty of things to do like hire bikes, horse riding and the tree-top adventure park.

  • Things we liked - there was a really lovely atmosphere here, quiet and relaxing but with enough to do.

  • Things to be aware of - reduced activity schedule during low season and it was quite expensive to hire bikes here - adult and child bikes €13 each per day.

You know I love doing laundry to save time once we’re back home and there were washing facilities on-site for €5 a wash with lots of machines available. There was also an on-site bouncy castle which the kids loved.

We took a trip to the local beach at Carnac which was about 10 minutes away. It was so peaceful and not a soul in sight.

We hopped on the Le Petit train to explore Carnac. This was €7.50 for adults and €4.50 for children. We had a guided tour and learnt a lot about the local area and the famous Standing Stones. There's also an excellent choice of restaurants at Carnac Plage.

There were lots of beautiful local beaches just a short drive away - we packed some kites and bucket and spade and the kids were happy for hours!

It’s well worth a visit to Le P'tit Délire Parc De Loisirs which is a local adventure park not far from the Eurocamp featuring loads of climbing courses for all ages, bouncy castles, suspended trampolines in the trees, huge soft play, outdoor rides, splash parks, water slides - don’t forget to take your swimming stuff!

Yes, definitely! This site had such a relaxing atmosphere whilst still having enough for the kids to do. It was actually recommended to me by my mother-in-law who took her children there when they were little and it didn’t disappoint. This was one of the first Eurocamps we ever did and I would recommend it to first time Eurocampers in a heartbeat!
