Eurocamp review: Camping Fabulous - Rome

This could quite possibly be one of my favourite trips. It had the perfect mix of relaxation and sightseeing which worked so well for us as a family. We stayed at Camping Fabulous, just outside Rome, and honestly it was the perfect base for exploring the city without the stress or price tag of staying central. If you’re not keen on driving abroad this would be a fantastic Eurocamp to start with as the location couldn’t be better. It’s 20 minutes to the airport, 30 minutes into Rome on public transport and about the same to the beach. You get a city break, poolside fun and even the coast all in one trip.

Getting around

We didn’t hire a car for this trip because we just didn’t need it! As soon as we arrived, everything felt easy. The airport in Rome has free buggies you can borrow which I think is a total game-changer. There is also a taxi rank just outside the airport but I’d probably recommend using Uber instead as they came in a little bit cheaper.

During our stay we used public transport the whole time. It was so easy to navigate and under 10s go free. We were getting into the centre of Rome for £1.50 each. It honestly saved us a fortune. The bus station is a five minute walk down the road too! It took about 15 to 20 minutes on the bus and you can use Apple Maps to see the buses too, which is super useful.

Accommodation

We stayed in a holiday homes where the kids get their own bedroom, you’ve got cooking facilities and a terrace for evenings outside. We also had access to all of the pools and water slides too.

Eating on-site

The on-site restaurant at the Eurocamp is so beautiful, I highly recommend it. It’s also just so peaceful where the cabins are. The prices at the restaurant were quite reasonable, but the portions are huge - two could’ve easily shared one. There was also a key for all of the allergens too.

Pools and facilities

The location is spot on and the facilities were great. There were lots of clean pools, waterslides for the kids and a whole range of activities going on throughout the day. Mini golf was the kids’ favourite. We’ve done Eurocamps for years and I recommend them to everyone I know - it’s the best way to see Europe with kids on a budget.

The site is huge and there are loads of beds. We usually got to the pool at about 11am and there were always beds left. Everything was spotless and the pools were so clean.

Entertainment on-site

There was also extra entertainment such as an inflatable park when we were there but you had to pay extra to do that. It was around €5 per child. They also had a live band playing in the evening but the entertainment is quite spread out so it doesn’t feel too busy when you’re down there.

Exploring Rome

When you’re in Rome there is so much to see that you could get away without spending an awful lot there. You can wander through the churches and see amazing architecture wherever you go. We went to Vatican City and Saint Peter’s Basilica was absolutely breathtaking. We spent other days wandering around seeing some beautiful churches and architecture. But honestly, it was just so beautiful. I love Italy!

Things to do in Rome with kids

If you’re looking for a recommendation of things to do with kids when you’re actually in Rome, we booked the Big Bus Tour - a hop-on hop-off bus and I definitely recommend it. It cost us €71 for a family of four as children under five travel free. You get a full commentary throughout and we learned loads. They provide headphones but I’d recommend bringing ones for the kids as they’re not very comfortable for them.

I also booked a tour through Get Your Guide. It was just under £50 each and the kids were free. It was to see the Colosseum, Roman Forum and Hill tour. We all had a handset which let us listen to the guide and again bring headphones for the kids. But if I’m being honest, we didn’t need the tour. My five-year-old son was super interested but my four-year-old daughter was absolutely not. It was really warm and they got fed up pretty quickly. The tour was way too long for them and we preferred to do it in our own time.

Sightseeing with the kids

We didn’t take a pram for my two children and they coped really well with the walking. We only did two full days of sightseeing. We did lots of breaks, a few shoulder rides and used public transport as much as we could.

Travelling with kids - is it worth it?

Some parts of the holiday were tiring but let this be a reminder that you can do trips like this with kids. It grinds my gears when people say “oh I wouldn’t go there with kids” but they’ve actually both really enjoyed it. It’s been interesting for them and they’ve been engaged with learning about the history here and I’d bring them again in a heartbeat. I think it’s so magical to get to see the world through their eyes and learn about it together.

How much did it cost?

We paid £850 for flights for six of us to Rome in the peak August school holidays. This is way less than some of the UK holidays I’ve seen. I’m really keen to do some more city breaks with the children so where should we try next?

How much it could cost you…

I’ve just priced up four nights in Rome for just under £500 for a family of four! For four nights at Camping Fabulous this Easter holidays it’s coming in around £150. You can also use code ITALY10 for an extra 10% off. Flights with Ryanair came in at £312 for a family of four. It’s self catering so you can spend as much or as little on food as you’d like and there’s an on-site shop to stock up what you need. Overall, The site is lovely, but the best bit for us was that it’s really close to the airport and it’s so cheap and easy to get public transport straight into Rome.
