The ultimate guide for 8 cheap halloween costumes for kids
Halloween is just around the corner and if you’re anything like me, you’re probably on the hunt for super cheap, DIY halloween costumes ideas. So don’t panic! I’ve rounded up 8 costumes you can make from old clothes, recycling or bits you already have at home.
A classic ghost
You’ll need an old white bed sheet and some scissors. You just cut some eye holes and throw it over your clothes! Voila- literally the easiest costume created in under 5 minutes!
2. A mime
Find a striped top that’s been hanging around and some gloves paired with a bit of face paint and you’ve got yourself another super easy costume! Or pair the top with glasses for a ‘Where’s Wally?’ costume!
3. A robot
You’ll need two cardboard boxes, foil and bottle tops.
Cover the boxes in foil, glue on the bottle tops as buttons and cut holes for arms and a head. Add paper towel tubes as arms if you have them lying around!
4. A lego brick
Now this was my son’s personal favourite! You’ll need a cardboard box and plastic cups. Paint the box in whatever colour you like and glue 6 plastic cups on the front as the ‘studs’. Cut holes for arms and their head and you’ve got an easy and instantly recognisable Lego costume!
5. A jellyfish
Use an old umbrella and either tissue paper, ribbon or plastic bags (whatever you have lying around the house). Attach ribbons or bubble wrap to the edges of the umbrella to create the tentacles and your child can float to the party as a jellyfish! A great one if the weather’s bad too!
6. A mummy
This is a classic. If you’ve got a big old top that you can cut into strips then wrap around your child just secure with safety pins and an extra bit of loo roll for effect and you’re done!
7. A scarecrow
Just use an oversized shirt, some jeans and a floppy hat and you can stuff the shirt with newspaper to give it that extra finishing touch!
8. An animal
If your child has any old headbands hanging around just cut out some cardboard ears and glue to a headband. Stuff a sock with newspaper and you’ve got yourself a make shift tail and then pair with whatever clothes match to create your child’s favourite animal without spending a fortune!
Overall my top tips are:
Raid your wardrobe first before you buy anything as you’ll be surprised what you can repurpose.
Swap costumes with friends or family as last year’s witch outfit could be this year’s vampire cape!
Use charity shops and pound stores for accessories like hats or face paint.
Keep aside some recycling that could be useful for DIY costumes during the run up to Halloween such as big cardboard boxes!
Involve the kids in decorating or painting - it adds so much more fun!
Plan early - have a look on Vinted and Facebook Marketplace or in the charity shops in September if you are looking to buy a specific costume so you can get ahead and get a bargain!
With these ideas you’ll have a Halloween wardrobe full of creative costumes for your kids without having to spend more than a few pounds!
