What is a Yoto?

If you’re anything like me, you’re always on the lookout for presents that are more than just tat that will clutter up the house. Something that the kids will actually use, love, and that might even give you a bit of peace and quiet.

That’s where the Yoto Player (and the smaller Yoto Mini) comes in. It’s been one of the best things I’ve bought for my two.

What is a Yoto?

A Yoto is a screen-free audio player designed especially for kids. Think of it like a little box of magic that plays stories, music, podcasts, learning content and more - all without the bright noisy distractions of tablets or phones. Instead of being stuck to a screen, the kids can pop in a Yoto card and each card unlocks something new to listen to such as an audiobook, music playlist, or even educational lessons explained in a child friendly way.

Why we love it as a family

Both of my kids have the Yoto mini (which is the smaller travel-friendly version) and we genuinely use them for everything.

  • Story time - we have found bedtimes are calmer!

  • Learning time - the cards cover everything from the water cycle, to volcanoes and earthquakes! I’m honestly shocked at how much they have learnt - they are like little sponges at this age!

  • Calm-down time - when the kids are overstimulated, popping headphones in their Yoto helps them regulate.

  • Travel - they are an absolute lifesaver on long car journeys or flights.

  • Entertainment - they are small enough for the kids to carry around so they can use them anywhere!

What I love most though is the variety of the cards means the Yoto will grow with them as they get older! We’re currently obsessed with the Horrible Histories cards (major nostalgia for me!), and I know as they get older they’ll discover new favourites.

Kid-friendly features us parents appreciate

  • They are headphone compatible which is a lifesaver when you want some quiet as a parent!

  • The durable design is made for little hands to carry them around!

  • No screens - all the benefits of entertainment without extra screen time!

  • The vast variety of cards available- there are honestly hundreds, from Julia Donaldson classics, to non-fiction learning.

I’m always conscious of not filling the house with more plastic toys at Christmas that get forgotten by January but the Yoto feels different! So if you’re stuck on gift ideas for Christmas I’d totally recommend.
