Transform your space with panel wallpaper: A beginner’s DIY guide
With Christmas behind us and winter still in full swing, it’s the perfect time to refresh your living space. I recently used Beadboard Panel Wallpaper from I Love Wallpaper to achieve the stunning, classic panel look without breaking the bank. As a DIY newbie, I’ve put together this beginner-friendly guide to help you recreate the look in your own home.
Materials you’ll need:
Beadboard panel wallpaper
Wallpaper adhesive
Tape measure
Pencil and spirit level
Wallpaper smoother or squeegee to remove air bubbles
Stanley knife or scissors - make sure the knife is sharp! A blunt blade will make the cutting process more difficult and could cause jagged edges
Bucket and sponge
Ladder if you're working on taller walls
Step 1: Prep the wall
Clean the surface: Wipe down your wall with a damp sponge to remove any dust or grime. A clean surface helps the adhesive stick better.
Fix imperfections: Fill any holes or cracks with wall filler and sand them smooth. This gives you a flat, even surface to work with.
Prime the wall: If your wall is bumpy or has a dark colour, apply a primer. This step helps the wallpaper adhere better and prevents any discolouration from showing through.
Step 2: Measure and cut the wallpaper
Measure the wall height: Measure the height of your wall, and then add an extra 5-10 cm to the top and bottom to allow for trimming.
Cut the wallpaper strips: Lay out your wallpaper and cut strips to the required length.
Draw a guideline: Use a level and pencil to draw a straight vertical line where your first strip will go. This ensures that your wallpaper will go up evenly and straight.
Step 3: Apply the wallpaper
Start from the centre: It’s important to start applying your wallpaper from the middle of the wall and work your way out. This ensures the wallpaper is evenly distributed and centred.
Apply adhesive: If you're using paste-the-wall wallpaper, spread adhesive evenly on the wall where the first strip will go.
Position the wallpaper: Align the top of the wallpaper strip with your guideline and gently press it onto the wall, smoothing as you go.
Smooth out bubbles: Use your wallpaper smoother to push out any air bubbles, working from the center of the strip outward.
Trim excess: Use your sharp utility knife to carefully trim the excess wallpaper at the top and bottom. A sharp knife will give you a cleaner, more precise cut.
Step 4: Match the pattern
Align the next strip: Place the next strip beside the first, making sure the pattern lines up seamlessly.
Repeat the process: Continue applying each strip, making sure to match the pattern and smooth out any bubbles.
Final Touches
Clean up: Wipe away any excess adhesive with a damp sponge before it dries.
Let it dry: Allow the wallpaper to dry fully before moving furniture back or hanging decorations.
Wrapping Up:
Whether you're a DIY pro or a beginner, using wallpaper to transform your space is a fun, cost-effective way to make a big impact. With just a few simple tools and some patience, you can give your room a fresh, stylish update that’ll last for years to come.
